Facets: A Contemporary Interpretation of Memorial Sculptures

Exploring the Tension Between Form and Matter

Facets is an ongoing series of digital and physical sculptures by designer Nils Hansen, offering a contemporary interpretation of the memorial sculptures found in the Monumental Cemetery in Genova, Italy.

Deeply inspired by the monumental Cemetery in Genova, Italy, Nils Hansen embarked on a mission to present the beauty and scope of the sculptures to a wider audience. The goal was to translate the design language into a more modern appeal, while still capturing the emotional essence of the original pieces.

What sets Facets apart is its exploration of the tension and equilibrium between form and matter. Drawing from previous topology studies of the sculptures, the series combines figurative representation with geometric abstraction. The result is a collection of conceptual objects that not only reference emotionally evocative memorial sculpture but also focus on the articulation of matter itself.

Utilizing a combination of digital technology and highly crafted traditional sculpting methods, Facets seamlessly merges the digital and physical realms. The sculptures are 3D printed using a blend of 80% brass and 20% PLA, resulting in a striking visual and tactile experience. Each piece is meticulously hand-polished to achieve a flawless finish.

Standing at a height of 10 cm, with a width of 11 cm and a depth of 9 cm, the sculptures in the Facets series exude a sense of presence and elegance. Their compact size allows for easy display in various settings, making them accessible to art enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Since its inception in April 2014 in Genova, Italy, the Facets project has garnered recognition and acclaim. In 2019, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the 3D Printed Forms and Products Design category. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, technical skill, and a commitment to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

Facets is not just a series of sculptures; it is a testament to the power of design to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity. Nils Hansen's innovative approach breathes new life into memorial sculpture, inviting viewers to contemplate the delicate balance between form and matter.
